Abstract

Discusses the application of John Dewey's educational philosophy to cooperative education. Points out that Dewey asserts an educational ideal that would promote progressive social change. He argues that cooperative education is rooted in the founder's, Herman Schneider, philosophy that champions a functionalist approach, which molds student learning to workplace norms. If cooperative education is to play a meaningful role in higher education, it will need to move to relating theory to practice in education and the workplace. Ideas of needed changes are posed.
